Waioneke forest field visit – insights into structural lumber markets

Anderson and O’Leary are harvesting part of their Waioneke Forest near South Head Golf Club, supplying high-quality structural lumber to their Whenuapai Sawmill. This visit offers valuable insights into market expectations – especially relevant for northern growers of dense Pinus radiata.

Hosted by Woodbank, the harvesting contractor, attendees will learn about operational setup, Council regulations, log grades, and market trends. Andrew Anderson will also share the forest’s history, planted by his late father Bruce Anderson.

  • Location: Waioneke Forest, Kaipara South Head, 400 metres past Waioneke School, South Head Peninsula.
  • Meet at the gate at 9.30am escorted entry by Woodbank staff.
  • Safety gear required: sturdy boots, hi-vis vest, helmet (some gear available).
  • Wet weather gear may be needed.

We’ll observe active logging of pruned 1994 Pinus radiata, view young and mature stands, and discuss:

  • New Zealand Farm Forestry Association council meeting held in Wellington on 11th November (Peter Berg)
  • Auckland Council forestry liaison updates (Nigel Price).

There's an optional lunch at South Head Golf Club Café (Buy-YO lunch).

Members are encouraged to bring guests – especially those planning harvests in the next 3–4 years. A great chance to connect before the holiday season.
